PATS WORKOUT JOHNSON AS WIDE OUT
The New England Patriots recently sent a high-ranking member of their coaching staff to meet with quarterback Josh Johnson for a private workout. The New York Times suggests the Patriots are looking at San Diego QB Josh Johnson as a wide receiver. The Pats love versatile players and could view Johnson, who was timed as fast as 4.44 at the Combine, as a slash-type player.
REPORT: KELLY’S KNEES A CONCERN
NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports that both of Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly's knees "are of such concern" that he may be removed from some teams' draft boards in April.
JEFF OTAH PRO DAY UPDATE
Jeff Otah, a probable first-round pick in next month's NFL draft, did not work out at Pittsburgh's Pro Day because he's resting his left ankle, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Otah, a 6-6, 322-pound offensive tackle, said he sprained his ankle prior to last season and that it never got a chance to fully heal. "I'm not 100 percent so this will give me some more time to get better and train better," Otah said today. Otah will work out for NFL teams on April 9.
’09 PROSPECT UPDATE
Florida junior WR Percy Harvin, one of the most explosive players in college football, could might miss the rest of spring practice because of a nagging heel injury. Harvin was wearing a protective boot earlier this week and is going to be re-evaluated before team doctors decide whether to shut him down for the spring. Meanwhile, Clemson RB James Davis, another solid prospect for the 2009 draft, will be sidelined for the rest of spring practice because of a shoulder injury, although the injury is not believed to be that serious.

The San Francisco 49ers figure to run a hybrid 3-4 defense that also features a lot of 4-3, which would make sense after the club signed defensive end Justin Smith, according to USA Today. "He's going to be put in situations to make a lot of plays," 49ers GM Scot McCloughan said. "We would not have paid him the money we paid him unless we knew how to use him. You'll see him at end, you'll see him at tackle, you'll see him at times standing up. He's a special guy."

GRAY A TEXAN, ROSENFALS ON THE BLOCK
Quinn Gray told the Houston Chronicle that he plans to sign with the Texans. Gray says his deal will be a one-year agreement worth $635,000, with $40,000 to sign.
RUMOR MILL: DILFER TO OAKLAND
Free agent Trent Dilfer told the congregation at Northside Christian Church in Fresno Sunday that the Raiders have shown interest in him.
DEUCE MAY BE CUT LOOSE
Deuce McAllister is awaiting a decision as to whether he will remain a member of the New Orleans Saints, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate. McAllister is about six months past his surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee and the team has until April 15 to decide whether to pay him a $1 million roster bonus or terminate his contract. He commented, "Unfortunately I've been through this routine before as far as rehab is concerned. Every day you just try to make it a little better. For them to make good on their investment, as far as paying me the roster bonus, then I wanted to make good on my health. Having ACL surgeries on both knees in the last three years is an unfortunate deal. Before we went into this season I wanted to make sure I was healthy and obviously the team felt the same way. If it wasn't for the right knee, then I would be able to do a lot more strenuous workout as far as planting and cutting, etc. You want to be careful with the microfracture and it give it time to heal fully. It's not 100 percent, but it's getting close to the point where I can do different exercises and different things. There's still time out there for me to rehab and get stronger. If rehab continues to go as well, then it's possible I can participate in that last minicamp May 29-June 1."
MCDONALDS FOILS MARSHALL
Brandon Marshall slipped on a McDonald's wrapper, which resulted in his arm going through the television set, according to NFL.com. It is unclear as to how many stitches Marshall needed and he commented, "I want to thank everybody for their concerns and let everyone know that I'm okay. It's funny because I pride myself on yards after catch and being one of the toughest players to take down once I have the ball in my hands. So for the next couple of days I'm going to take the time to build my confidence back up after allowing that McDonalds bag to take me down and send me through the entertainment center."

MARTIN RUCKER PRO DAY UPDATE
Daniel Mogollon reports University of Missouri TE Martin Rucker worked out at his school's Pro Day Thursday, March 20. Rucker ran a 4.71 40-yard dash, had a 37-inch vertical jump and a nine-foot, eight-inch broad jump. He said that he ran slower than he expected but his vertical was impressive. Rucker did not perform at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine and his vertical jump of 37-inches would have placed him second. Scouts view the vertical jump as the most important drill for tight ends because it measures explosiveness.
HARVEY CREATES BUZZ
Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey showed great burst in pass rush drills, and enough agility during his Pro Day, that scouts from teams utilizing the 3-4 alignment have already begun scheduling private workouts, according to Yahoo! Sports. While Harvey's burst makes him an intriguing fit as a 3-4 rush linebacker, his size, strength and long arms (82-inch wingspan) have most teams still viewing him as a better fit as a traditional 4-3 defensive end.
DAN CONNOR PRO DAY UPDATE
Penn State LB Dan Connor indeed was timed in around 4.7 seconds for the 40 at the school's on-campus workout earlier this week. Connor had once been considered one of the top two LBs in the 2008 draft and a likely top 15-20 pick but his stock has slipped of late and that time in the 40 isn't likely to help. At the same time, though, Connor was quicker in some of the other drills; in fact, his time in the three-cone drill (6.78) would have been the third fastest among OLBs at the combine, while his time in the short shuttle (4.25) would have been in the top 10 for OLBs.
JORDON DIZON PRO DAY UPDATE
University of Colorado LB Jordon Dizon worked out at his school's Pro Day Wednesday, March 19. Dizon ran a 4.63 40-yard dash, had a 34 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 4.51-second short shuttle, a 6.78-second cone drill and completed 12 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. He measured in at 6-foot and 225 pounds.

Quinn Gray will visit with the Houston Texans this weekend, according to Pro Football Talk. Gray has also visited with Oakland and Green Bay recently, but wasn't offered a deal by either club.

San Francisco coach Mike Nolan made it clear earlier this week that there will be an open competition for the team's starting quarterback position in training camp and the preseason between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill, according to NFL.com. "I have no favorites, I have no favorites at all," Nolan said. "You want to get the best one out there, because the players are looking. You're a football team, it's about winning. And your football team performs better when they know that jobs are won or lost on the field. That's where this will happen."

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, according to the Sports Network. Wilson signed with the Steelers as a free agent before the 2005 season after spending his first four seasons in the NFL with San Francisco. In three campaigns with Pittsburgh, he totaled 81 receptions for 1,162 yards and two touchdowns.
DAVIS DRAWS PRAISE
Vernon Davis has gained praise from Coach Nolan, according to the SF Chronicle. Nolan was asked about Davis' route running skils and replied, "He's a wild horse kind of player rather than a polished tight end. Davis still has a lot to learn, but is better after the catch than Gates and Gonzalez. In terms of blocking, Davis is better than the other two could ever dream of being."
GROSS AGREES TO TERMS
Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Jordan Gross, the team’s franchise player for 2008, has accepted his one-year tender. As a result, Gross will earn a fully-guaranteed, one-year salary of $7.455 million.
